Detail, Quality Construction & Craftsmanship Make Our Custom Birdhouses Unique

Each of our handcrafted, custom replica birdhouses receives a tremendous amount of attention to create their unique architectural style - about 60 hours of benchwork.

We use CAD software to develop scale plans for our custom birdhouses. The biggest challenge is interpreting the scale and dimensions of our clients' homes, as photos are from many different perspectives and often are obstructed by trees and other landscaping. By emailing plan drawings, we're able to work with clients to get the details right (CAD Drawing From Plan).

Our custom replica birdhouses are made from milled 5/8" eastern white pine, fastened and joined with exterior grade screws and glue. Long grain but joints are used throughout the birdhouse. The walls and roof are fastened to an interior frame for support, and the bottom is reinforced to accept mounting hardware. Copper flashing is attached to roof seams for water proofing.

Architectural details are carved and burned into the birdhouse using a variety of tools and artistic techniques. Artchitectural details commonly include shingle, siding, window, shutter, brick, door, molding and fascia board detail. Once the details are complete, entry holes are added and the birdhouse receives its final bare wood sanding (see Unfinished Birdhouse).

The exterior is airbrushed with a sealer, followed by a thorough sanding. Exterior colors are blended and matched to a high resolution color print of the client's photos. The blended exterior colors are airbrushed and handbrushed onto the birdhouse. Finally two coats of non-yellowing marine urethane finish are sprayed onto the birdhouse.

For nestling safety, ventilation and drainage holes are incorporated into the birdhouse and interior nest boxes are left unpainted and chemical free. Entry holes are positioned so that that nestling cannot accidently fall from the nest box. Removable bottom panels allow for easy cleaning (see Clean Out Panels). Entry holes are lined with copper sheating to prevent damage from chewing animals and to discourage predators.

All of our birdhouses are constructed for outdoor use and with proper placement and maintainence should provide years of enjoyment. We recommend that the houses be located in a shady, sheltered area to minimize weathering and that the birdhouses be moved inside during the winter months when they are not in use.
